Project description

Eutrophication is one of the main factors driving the spreading of bacteria-dominated zones on continental shelves and in estuaries. Accompanied changes in the oxygen concentration and pH values affect a variety of marine organisms such as corals. The main goal of the project is to study effects of eutrophication on the concentrations of dissolved oxygen and the pH as well as the emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs: CO2, CH4, N2O) into the atmosphere. Therewith we will contribute to the overarching project goals by providing new data and knowledge that is important on a global scale as well as on a local scale as it is crucial to better understand the current and future development of coastal ecosystems (seagrass beds and especially corals reefs) of Hainan.

Information to our field campaign

What have we done in Hainan during our field work?

• Sampling of water for dissolved organic carbon, dissolved inorganic carbon and nutrients
• Measurement of physico-chemical paramters such as pH, dissolved oxygen, salinity, temperature and CO2 emissions using WTW Multi 3430 detector and a modified version of the LI-8100A floating chamber
• Measuring of pH, salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, air temperature and wind speed using a pocket Ferry Box
• Analyzing trace gases (carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide) using Fourier Transformation Infrared spectrometer connected to a Weiss equilibrator

What have we done in the field laboratory?

• Preservation of water samples
• Analyzing ammonia in water using HACH Salicylat-Method and LIBRA S11 Photometer
• Permanganometric determination of the chemical oxygen demand

Where did we collect our samples?
